Micha Otto’s works investigate the tensions between human and non-human patterning, playing with ideas of natural and unnatural order. Using primarily photography but also performance, moving image and drawing, Otto plays tricks with the image, creating sometimes absurd scenarios which underscore a human drive to create structures that are external to the ecosystems which they inhabit. His works questions idea of enclosure, investigating structures which are designed to keep nature out or in, and the slippages between these boundaries. Frequently working with non-human animals, in zoos, or in idealised ‘pristine landscapes, Otto mocks the idea of ‘human nature’, and grapples with the impossibility on conceiving of or representing a post-human world, within an increasingly daunting eco-political climate.

Micha Otto studied at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee and graduated in 2008 with a diploma in sculpture with Prof. Karin Sander / Prof. Eran Schaerf. Two semesters abroad at Hiroshima City University, Japan (2006 - 2007) in the Contemporary Art and Theory department with Prof. Yukinori Yanagi enabled him to study Japanese culture and deepen artistic reflections. A subsequent master’s degree in art and media under Alberto De Campo at the University of the Arts Berlin was completed in 2010. He obtained his master's degree in 2011 from Prof. Inge Mahn. Supported by a DAAD (German Academic Exchange Program) travel grant, Otto was able to continue his artistic work in Japan in 2010. Otto has since undertaken residencies internationally and his work is held in private and public collections. His work has appeared in multiple

solo and group exhibitions and he is a recent recipient of the 2020 „Neustart Kultur“ stipend of Stiftung Kunstfonds.
